Senior Suffers MCL Injury, Will Have Surgery

From Courier-Journal

The hits just keep on coming for Louisville football. Six days from their annual Governor’s Cup showdown with Kentucky, head coach Steve Kragthorpe announced that redshirt senior Mozell Axson had suffered an MCL injury during non-contact drills and will be lost for the season.

“The silver lining in that is Mozell does have a redshirt year so he should be back with us next year,” Kragthorpe told reporters at the weekly media news conference.

Axson was coming off a 2007 season that saw him perform valuable special teams duty while filling in at middle linebacker at times. He recorded 13 tackles on the season, including a career-best four tackles against Middle Tennessee State. He tallied three tackles in both the Cards’ season-opening win over Murray State and the team’s 40-34 loss at Kentucky.

While Axson had appeared to lose the starting middle linebacker job to junior-college transfer Antwon Canady, he was still being counted on to be a contributor to a unit that lost its three starters and four total players from a year ago. Miami (FL) transfer James Bryant and true freshman Keith Baker are now listed as Canady’s top backups.

Louisville will open its season against Kentucky on August 31, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30PM. The game will be covered by ESPN.
