The Lindy Plan
Since anyone can take a well-known football playoff proposal and call it their own, allow me to introduce the Lindy Plan. Much like the Wetzel Plan, my playoff proposal offers a 16-team playoff inviting the conference champions of all 11 IA leagues along with 5 at-large berths. Where we diverge is in the hosting of each round.
Knowing that well-established, tradition-rich bowls won't like being pushed out the door, my proposal puts each opening round game at a regional-specific bowl that is a notch below the BCS quartet. I am thinking you would/could go with:
SOUTHWEST
Cotton
Liberty
SOUTHEAST
Gator
Capital One
NORTHEAST/MIDWEST (since no one wants to stay home, we'll put these down south)
Peach
Outback
WEST
Sun
Holiday
The winner's of each of these matchups would move on to the round of 8, meaning 4 games that fit perfectly with... the traditional BCS games. Someone goes to the Sugar, someone goes to the Rose, someone goes to the Orange, and someone goes to the Fiesta. In fact, you could probably align Rose with West, Orange & Sugar with Southeast & Midwest/Northeast, and Fiesta with Southwest. If you want to rotate these four as championship sites, all it would require is giving one other bowl a seat at the 2nd round table (maybe the Liberty is squeezed in as a 1st-rounder and moves one of the big bowls up to a 2nd-rounder?).
If keeping the big bowls as part of the title game is no big deal, then the NCAA is free to rotate the title site just like it does the Final Four. In fact, if the winners from the round of 8 all go to this site, we have a Football Final Four. Keeps a TON of fans in a city for the weekend (or more) and gives cities huge tourist dollars with a lot of college die-hards buying hotels for a week or more. Put it in places like the RCA Dome in Indy, the new park in Arizona... heck, steal the NFL's Super Bowl rotation and take big-time football to one of those places in January as another football-themed New Years party.
Please feel free to pass on the Lindy Plan. In fact, steal it and call it your own!
