Default Big East teams to be added

I heard this on the radio that Army and Navy are possibly going to be added to the BE.

The scenerio is they will be football only opponents and each institution will play 4 big east schools per year. Then the following year they will alternate and play the 4 schools they didn't play in the previous season.

They will have no bowl bid from playing Big East teams.

It is a possible scenerio based on Louisville and Rutgers having trouble with teams backing out of their scheduled games and not finding quality out of conference opponents.

This doesn't seem like a very good idea. Didn't Army just drop out of C-USA because they couldn't compete against that level of competition? How are they going to compete with USF, West Virginia, and (someday this will hopefully be true again) us?

It solves some scheduling issues short-term, but I don't think this bolsters the conference strength in the long term.

This recent article probably puts an end to that scenario. The Army was being asked to allow Caleb Campbell, first round draft pick by the Lions, to forego his required service and be allowed to enter the NFL. One of the deals trying to be struck was that he would be a recruiter in the offseason. When the Army wouldn't allow that, it effectively put an end to any chance that these schools could get the athletes it needs to compete. Of course the Air Force is somewhat competitive, but neither Army or Navy seem to want to step up their programs.

Army and Navy play a DI schedule, this scenerio would only be 4 of their 11 games.

Quote:
Aug. 29, 2008 Temple
Sept. 6, 2008 New Hampshire
Sept. 20, 2008 Akron
Sept. 27, 2008 at Texas A&M
Oct. 4, 2008 at Tulane
Oct. 11, 2008 Eastern Michigan
Oct. 18, 2008 at Buffalo
Oct. 25, 2008 Louisiana Tech
Nov. 1, 2008 Air Force
Nov. 8, 2008 at Rice
Nov. 22, 2008 at Rutgers
Dec. 6, 2008 Navy
Well there you go they already are playing Rutgers, U of L just played them a couple seasons ago.

Texas A & M, Tulane, Air Force all have decent programs, of course some years better than others.

They are already at a disadvantage in recruiting because of their height and weight restrictions for military personell. I believe the football players are given some leeway but have to cut weight i'm sure to graduate.

That should have been 7th round draft choice, not 1st round. Even more evidence, the highest (and only) draftee between the 2 is a 7th rounder.

It's still in the early stages, maybe it won't happen at all

Big East courting Army and Navy

Posted: Monday July 28, 2008 05:12AM ET

It has taken five years for the aftershocks of the ACC's raid on the Big East to subside. Now the league that commissioner Mike Tranghese rebuilt seems rock solid. So what's next for the league? Expansion. The Post has learned that the Big East has explored deals with Army and Navy in football. The concept is for each of the service academies to play four Big East opponents each season on a rotating basis. A ninth member, even limited partners such as Army and Navy (both have a significant TV following) would give league members eight league games. That would allow the flexibility of four non-conference games so teams could pursue non-conference rivals such as Pittsburgh and Penn State. Army and Navy initially rejected the idea of a Big East association but because both are independents, that could change.

The last thing the BE needs is more partial members. And bad ones at that.

First of all, Caleb Campbell was not a first round draft pick, he was a seventh round draft pick, big difference.

Second of all, Army sucks at football. Navy could end up giving some teams some real trouble because the past few years they have been a decent team.

When will Notre Dame come to their senses and join the Big East, not to say that they are particularly good this year, but they have the potential to be when they want to be.

Not defending ND, I hate them sumbitches, but they really dont need to join a conference. They have their own tv contract and always have teams chomping at the bit to play them. Everybody wants a shot at ND. Their schedule is usually pretty tough. If I'm the pres at ND, I'm keeping things just the way they are.

Also got a mention they have their own unique criteria for getting a BCS bowl.

ND needs to start scheduling a little more realistically if they are going to climb out of their hole. You don't build a program playing a top25 team every week. That's how you lose 8 games a year.
