The Cards are in a BCS conference, we have very good facilities, we get TV coverage, were DI those things alone will put U of L in the mix in a lot of recruits minds.
Now the ability of our coaching staff to sell our program is as much of a deciding factor as the previous seasons record. I think when Jurich says that the Cards are rebuilding that he is allowing the Kragthorpe a free pass on the season. If they do have another down year he is already using damage control so the Fire Kragthorpe mob already knows this wasn't the year to expect big results. I don't agree with that but that's what I believe was the reason. Rod Council already had one strike against him for stealing computers in H.S. before he came to Louisville. Council was a Petrino recruit, and it's not Krag's fault he robs a Quickie Mart in another state. Same with Willie WIlliams, Jurich brought Williams in on someone elses recomendation with a zero tolerence policy. There was obviously marijuana usage within our roster, Spillman had a traffic charge w/ weed found and for mysterious reasons 2 other "passengers" ran from WIlliams vehicle while he was munching on weed. Then Urrutia comes up with turf toe and Spillman is suspended for the rest of the season. Players flunking out of school, transfering over playing time ect happens every year. We had a coaching change, philosophy changed as well and the teams mindset has to adapt or they won't be in the cards plans.

Actually, Kragthorpe is recruiting pretty well. Our recruiting is not much different from what Petrino usually got us and Kragthorpe recruited a worldclass defensive coaching staff. He's doing just fine. This quote from this mornings paper about player defections says it all about fans' attitude if you ask me:

I see where he's coming from wku, but without coming out and saying exactly why this team needed to be blown up, people will continue to question why an incredibly successful program needed to change things so much.

And Krag is recruiting as well as Petrino? Really? I seem to remember getting players like Eric Wood, George Bussey, Montrell Jones, Harry Douglas, Robert McCune, and Amobi Okoye while Petrino was here. Now I look at the recruiting pages and see nothing but JUCO players and 2-star LB's. I don't see how you can even try to claim the 2008 class was as good as Petrino's classes. MAYBE as good as Petrino's first class, but then we're comparing a 7-6 C-USA bowl loser to a 12-1 BCS bowl winner.

last year we had
2008: 7 - 2 star players 14 - 3 star players 1 - 4 star player 2007 (a class kragthorpe helped to close out) 4 - 2 star players 6 - 3 star players 6 - 4 star players 2006: 12 - 2 stars 12 - 3 stars 3 - 4 stars 1 - 5 star 2005: 14 - 2 star players 8 - 3 star players 5 - 4 star players There's a brief recruiting snapshot. From 2006 - 2006 Petrino recruited 26 two star players.. yet he's such an awesome recruiter. Krag is on pace for 14 two-star recruits in 2 years and everyone is on his ass. It's really cool to bash the coach these days. From 2005 - 2006, Petrino successfully signed 20 three-star guys. Kragthorpe is on pace to sign 28!!! Now, this assumes that Kragthorpe doubles his numbers next year, but humor me. Petrino's best recruiting year was by far 2005, but he followed up that year by signing just as many 2 star players as 3 star guys. So give me a break about recruiting. Anyone who says Kragthorpe isn't recruiting good players is speaking out their ass.

Hey Brandon, how many of Krag's 3-star players are JUCO pick-ups? You can't really compare a 3-star guy who MIGHT play for two seasons to a 3-star kid who can actually have an opportunity to develop beyond that and still play a full season or two for the team.
Now if you want to tell me that three 3-star JUCO's and a 4-star JUCO turn a bad class into one that competes with one that had a TOTAL of 3 JUCO players... well, more power to you. I'm fairly confident strong programs were never built on desperation stop-gaps and 2-star high school players. Not all classes are made the same and neither are all 3- and 4-star recruits.

I think it is ok to Bash Kragthorp because he ended last season at 6-6 and that is the worst record since 1-10 in Ron Cooper's last season.
Recruiting aside if this team doesn't finish with a winning record for the second straight year why not bash the coach? |
