Default Lamar Myles going to NFL

Bobby V just interviewed Lamar, and he's already signed with agent. I wish him well, but was really hoping he came back for senior season.

And we get thinner and thinner on the defensive side. English has his work cut out for him... hope he can steal some HS'ers before signing day.

Default Big Mistake

that is an even bigger mistake than Allen transferring and Urrutia leaving.

At least Urrutia has size and some raw talent if not the work ethic & heart to go with it at least a team is probably willing to take a chance on Mario for the size he brings to the position alone.

Myles is a talented football player at the college level.

I didnt think he was big enough for a college LB, I dont think he is big enough for the NFL.

If Robert "The Hammer" McCune (6 foot 245lbs) can barely stick (3 teams in two years) in the NFL (only because he's a special teams beast) how can Myles at 6 foot 220lbs?

6 foot 220 lbs is a DB or a safety in the NFL.

Here's a list of some LB's I recognized by name (starters) and their height and weight.

Patrick WIllis is 6-1 and 242 lbs.(NFL defensive rookie of the year)
Lance Briggs 6'1" 240 lbs
Keith Bulluck 6'3" 235
London Fletcher 5'10" 245
Scott Fujita 6'5" 250
A.J. Hawk 6'1" 240
Napoleon Harris 6'3" 253
Willie McGinest 6'5" 270
Shawne Merriman 6'4" 272
Ray Lewis 6'1" 250
Junior Seau 6'3" 250
Takeo Spikes 6'2" 242
Terrell Suggs 6'3" 260
Lofa Tatupu 6'0" 242
Brian Urlacher 6'4" 258
Nate Webster 6'0" 232
Channing Crowder 6'2" 242

When offensive lineman are average 6'6" 320lbs a 6 foot 220lb linebacker has to be bad ass to make it at that position.

Guys like Zach Thomas 5'11" 228 are rare and few and far between, he is the exception and it's because he's a tackling machine and a pro bowler that he is still around.

BIG MISTAKE

I dont think he will get drafted, free agent route for Myles.

I'm still pulling for him but I think he's going to have to really, really impress in camp.

Good luck Lamar. Can't wait to see yet another standout defensive pro from the school that supposedly never played any defense.

This is really suprising considering the hires of English and Roof. It seems that Lamar would really stand out on an aggressive, blitzing defense which is what I expect next year. Hopefully this isn't another case of a player listening to the hanger ons with their hands out and not those that really know. Oh well, good luck Lamar!

I agree, JT. Either he had already pulled the trigger with the agent before we got English and Roof officially, or got some really bad advice from someone. Too bad... our D-line and LB corps is look T-H-I-N next season.

I think that he may not even get drafted......I hope I am wrong because I like to see former Cards do well in the NFL.

It's possible that 6 JUNIOR LBs will come out this year not including him. Those 6 are high on Kyper's list.

I dont think he will either, I mean he was only a partial starter 2-years ago for a few games until Nate Harris won his job back and he did play well last year but considering his lack of size for a LB maybe he's hoping to wow the scouts at the combine by throwing a measly 225 lbs around 40 times on the bench press test.

Quote:
A leader also in the weightroom, he broke Robert McCune's bench press record with an astonishing 490 lbs.
Found this assessment which doesnt sound too rosey except this guy actually sees Myles being drafted late.

Quote:
A look at the 2007 junior class as players decide whether to enter the 2008 NFL draft.

Louisville linebacker Lamar Myles is a good example of a player who's better suited for college than the NFL. Myles is a good athlete who flies all over the field, and he led the team in tackles in 2007, his junior season.

But Myles, who said today that he's declaring for the 2008 NFL draft, is listed at 6-foot-1 and 220 pounds, and that's just not what NFL teams are looking for in a linebacker. Unless he's planning on gaining 20 pounds without losing any speed in the next six weeks, NFL scouts might ask him to work out with the safeties at the Indianapolis combine.

If Myles had stayed at Louisville for his senior season, he could have bulked up a bit to prove himself as a linebacker, or get more experience in pass coverage to demonstrate what he could do as a safety. As it is, I see Myles as a late-round pick.

Yeah, and JR Russell and Nate Harris were late-round picks. Doesn't guarantee squat when there is no signing bonus or incentive to develop you. Sounds like a special teamer at best.
