Default 1st Favre now Strahan?

Quote:
Source: Strahan wants $8M to return

Posted: Monday August 25, 2008 05:45AM ET

Michael Strahan was vacationing in Greece Sunday when the news broke that his old friend Osi Umenyiora was lost for the season. But he would consider ending his vacation and coming out of retirement if the Giants really want him back, the Daily News has learned. According to a source close to the future Hall of Famer, all it would take to get the 37-year-old to end his 77-day retirement would be $8 million and a few kind words to return now that Umenyiora is out for the season.
OK this situation is a little different because it appears the Giants need Strahan and the Pack didn't need Farve but both retired, shouldn't they honor their word?

Quote:
They have a contract and the Packers are honoring that contract just like Favre should be honoring his word.
Still after all the complaining people did about Favre should stay retired, what do you say about Strahan?

Do the same opinions about retirement not apply to Strahan as they did to Favre?

It's different, if the Giants want him back. The Packers were done with Brett Favre. Freddy

Yes, bling, they do apply. Everybody should stay retired if they say they are retiring. At least if they want most people to regard them with any real character or backbone(though in this case Strahan seems like he's just trying to help out and I can't say that he lacks either).
If I tell you to meet me at Tumbleweed at 9 but don't show up because I changed my mind, does that affect your view of me? Or is that just me exercising my right to change my mind on a whim, irregardless of other people?

This is a different situation though. The key in that article is this considerate quote...

I hardly think that scenerio fits with the subject here.

If you were a friend of mine and you told me to meet you and did not call and say I'll be late or I can;t make it, that's a dickhead move. but I'd let it slide if that was out of your character.

If that was common of you then yes that would change my opinion of you.

I totally 100% disagree with your opinion that if a sports figure decides to unretire that they have a character flaw or lack backbone as you say.

Sports and the money they make, the injuries they incure, the pain they put their body through all play into their decisions and apparently you overlook those facts or know absolutely nothing about that.

If a players body tells them they can't preform at the level they are accostomed to that might play into their decision.

Sometimes athletes ignore those signs and it shows when they come back,

In Favres case he preformed at the top of his game and I don;t believe his skills could have eroded in just 7 months to force him to retire.

The Packers wanted to know Favres plans so they could plan for the upcoming draft and wanted a decision. #1 Favre stated he felt it necessary to tell them he was retiring because he didn't want to say he'd be back then change his mind closer to camp and leave the Packers in a bad spot.

He had a change of heart after he retired. he is allowed to do that.
The NFL has a process in place for just such a reason.
In the NFL you have to file papers to officially retire and also to officially un-retire, so for you to act like Favre broke some precedent and now lacks backbone or character is absurd.

In this instance you are out of touch with the reality of sports, this happens, in all sports, so get used to it and drop your preconcieved notions of what it means.

Favre is set to make probably 50-million dollars from his precentage of jersey sales from the NFL and other endorsements, far more than the Packers "package" to stay retired.

The week he unretired it was in the media the number of jerseys the NFL was producing was as high as what Vick did at his height of popularity and Favres percentage exactly I forgot but It was several million.

On top of that the things the Packers offered him to stay retired (merchandising products, clothing line, blog ect) , will still be offered once he does retire.

I know it happens all the time but I'm not going to rationalize it and act like it's all cool. It's bush league. Especially the saga that has gone with Favre the past few years. Man up, make a decision and own it. Like farmdude said, they're clowns. And the stage is what their addicted to as much as anything athletic.

And this is coming from someone who used to really like Favre. And it's because I thought he was a straight-shooter, a team player, and a tough guy. But after what he did to the Packers it's clear that he's just like every other pro athlete; in it for himself, team be damned. That and he's as wishy-washy as a Maytag.

I do.

Personally I was a Ricky Williams fan when he was at Texas, I loved his running style, I was shocked that a Coach like Mike Dikta gave up so much for WIlliams but I figured he thought Ricky was his next Walter Payton.

I was also then shocked at Williams incintive laden contract but I actually admired him for it, he was a professional athlete that only expected to be paid if he produced.

Unfortunately he dislocated his ankle after 10 games and didn't reach many of his incintives so it backfired.

I was upset do when he retired but I understood Ricky is a quirky fellow and there really wasn't anything we could.

I'm also glad he unretired and has a chance to redeem himself in Maimi and to the fans.

Now Favre I don't care so much about but I do think he has the right to continue playing if he chooses, wether the Pack wanted him or not..

Maybe they should institute a rule where if a player officialy retires that they must sit out a season before they can return. It would probably eliminate alot of these knee jerk retirements.

Whilel I can't argue your logic, I it would stop it but I don't see it happening and I don't see it being that big of an issue..

When an NFL player can get caught using recreational street drugs or preformance enhancers/steroids and all they get is a 4-game suspension on their 1st offense I just can't see a guy un-retiring and the league enforcing a 1-year suspension.

How many of these "un-retirings" have we seen anyway, I don't think it's a huge problem that needs to be addressed yet.

I still like Favre, I get a kick out of RWilliams, I just really don't care about anything that they say or do. I am not a big fan of any one NFL team so I just like to watch good football. I will usually have a team or 3 that I am pulling for about half way through the season. That would be some player that I am liking or a team philosophy or something. But otherwise it is SHUT UP AND PLAY.
