I don't agree it matters which teams are playing the best "right now". The teams chosen to the play the NC game should be evaluated on how they have performed on the course of the entire season. If USC wanted to play in the title game, then they should have thought twice about losing to lowly Stanford. Georgia is looking good now, but they too looked bad earlier in the season. I don't necessarily believe Kansas or OSU won any tough games to actually "earn" the bid to the NC, but they also didn't lose to any chumps and only have one lose each. LSU played one of the toughest schedules of anyone and lost both times in multiple overtime games. I'd put LSU against Kansas or OSU and watch LSU beat the snot out of either team.
